I was diagnosed with malignant melanoma under my thumbnail on July 21, 2021. For those of you who have been following my cancer journey, you know that I am a surgeon who became at patient and then documented my journey in this blog. After undergoing surgery, I completed a yearlong treatment plan of chemoimmunotherapy infusions, having completed my last infusion on June 29, 2022. This blog recounts my story with a focus on a surgeon who became a patient, melanoma awareness, and the intersection of medicine and faith.
Recently Momentum Magazine, a publication of the Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center, featured my story in an article. I am posting the link below for anyone that has not had a chance to see the actual magazine. I appreciate your continued support and prayers. My next round of scans are in 3 three weeks.

Lee, what a great article and what a heartwarming story. You have been an inspiration to us all. I understand Holly, and I are going to be seeing you around the end of the summer. Can’t wait to see you guys.
One story in the article rang a bell for me. In 2001 I had 3x bypass surgery and, with complications, spent 7 extra days in intensive care. As my surgeon was giving me my discharge talk, he said, “I want you walking as much as possible.”
Well, we lived on a golf course, and to walk the full 18 was 6.5 miles. I got home and, the next day did the front nine, and since I was enjoying the walk, I did the back nine too. For a week, I walked the course every day.
At the end of my now seven days of walking the course, I went back for a follow-up appointment. When the doctor asked me if I was walking, I told him the truth.
He literally jumped out of his chair and shouted, “My God, Ben, I meant for you to walk around the block!”
Communication is everything.
